Typical Project Timeline

What Is a Casement Window?

A casement window is hinged vertically on one side and swings outward using a crank operator housed at the bottom of the sash. Unlike sliding or hung windows that move sash across sash, the casement sash sweeps clear of the frame opening entirely, letting in unobstructed airflow across the full window width.

Side-Mounted Hinges

Three hinges run vertically down one stile. The sash pivots outward from this edge, swinging away from the frame to open. Hinge placement determines which direction the window opens and should account for exterior obstacles and prevailing wind direction.

Crank Operator

A worm-gear mechanism housed at the sash base drives an extension arm that pushes the window open when turned. The operator provides mechanical advantage for easy opening and holds the sash at any position between fully open and fully closed.

Compression Seal System

When the lever handle engages, the sash presses firmly against a perimeter gasket running the entire frame. This compression seal is fundamentally superior to the brush or pile weather stripping used in sliding and hung windows, which degrade and compress over time.

Full-Opening Ventilation

The sash swings completely clear of the frame opening. No sash rail bisects the ventilation area. A casement window provides up to 100 percent of its frame area as usable airflow, the highest ventilation-to-frame ratio of any window style.

Interior Screen Mounting

Screens attach to the interior side of the frame on spring-loaded clips. This keeps the screen hardware protected from Colorado’s UV and hail while allowing quick removal for cleaning or emergency egress.

From First Call to Final Walkthrough

Casement replacement follows the same disciplined process as any of our replacement window projects. Here is what to expect from initially contacting us, through completion.

Step 1

In-Home Estimate

We measure rough openings, evaluate the surrounding framing and sill condition, and review product and glass options with you. Transparent written pricing before any commitment.

Step 2

Product Order and Permit

Casements are factory-ordered to your exact opening dimensions. We file all permits with the relevant municipality, Denver, Aurora, Littleton, or Golden, before scheduling installation.

Step 3

Removal and Installation

Existing units are removed, framing inspected and repaired if needed, new sills flashed, and casement units set, shimmed, insulated, and sealed to manufacturer specification.

Step 4

Trim, Hardware, Testing

Interior and exterior trim finished. Each operator tested for smooth crank action across full travel. Each latch tested for full multi-point engagement. Screens installed and seated.

Step 5

Walkthrough and Cleanup

We walk every window with you, demonstrate the operator and locking system, review warranty coverage, and remove all debris. The site is left clean before we leave.

Casement Window Costs in Colorado

Casements carry a modest premium over double-hung and sliding windows because the operator mechanism and multi-point locking hardware are more complex. That premium is justified by the performance advantages and typically does not exceed 10 to 15 percent above a comparable double-hung specification.

Entry-Level

$700–$1400

per window installed

  • Frame: Mid-grade vinyl
  • Glass: Double-pane, Low-E, argon fill
  • Operator: Single-point crank, plastic-gear housing
  • Lock:Single-point lever
  • Best for: Rental properties, budget-constrained renovations

Mid-Range

$800–$1600+

per window installed

  • Frame: Premium vinyl or fiberglass composite
  • Glass: Double-pane, Low-E366, argon or krypton
  • Operator: Metal-gear operator, scissor arm
  • Lock: Two or three-point locking
  • Best for: Most Colorado homeowners

Premium

$2200–$5000+

per window installed

  • Frame: Fiberglass, aluminum-clad wood, or wood interior
  • Glass: Triple-pane or performance double-pane with krypton
  • Operator: Heavy-duty commercial-grade operator
  • Lock: Full-perimeter multi-point
  • Best for: Golden, foothills, historic districts, high-end remodels

Where Casements Outperform in Colorado

Colorado’s environment has a way of exposing weaknesses in window systems. Casements address several Front Range challenges that other window styles handle less effectively.

When wind pressure builds against a closed casement, it pushes the sash tighter into the gasket rather than forcing it open. This self-sealing behavior means a casement window leaks less air under load than any sliding or hung window at equivalent specification. For homes on the western edge of the Denver metro where Chinook events push sustained gusts, this is a meaningful performance advantage.

The outward-swinging sash acts as a scoop, directing moving air into the home even when the wind is not blowing perpendicular to the window. Paired casements on opposite walls or installed to face the prevailing southwest summer breeze can cool a room without mechanical ventilation. This is particularly useful in Denver’s older housing stock where central air conditioning was not part of the original construction.

A casement sash closed flush against its frame presents no exposed hardware gaps for hail to impact and exploit. The lever handle and operator mechanism are recessed within the frame profile, reducing the number of exposed components compared to double-hung sash hardware. For neighborhoods in Aurora and the eastern Denver suburbs where severe hail is a recurring event, consider laminated glass in lower-floor units facing prevailing storm directions.

The tighter the air seal, the better the insulating performance. Casements consistently test at lower air infiltration rates than comparable double-hung or sliding units. At Colorado’s elevation, where solar heat gain is amplified and winter temperatures demand serious performance from your building envelope, that lower infiltration number translates to real heating and cooling savings across a long Front Range winter.

Colorado’s 25 percent higher UV exposure than sea level attacks plastic operator components faster than in lower-elevation markets. We specify metal-geared operators with UV-stable housing rather than the all-plastic mechanisms found in budget-tier units. This adds modest cost upfront and prevents the operator stripping failures we regularly see in Colorado homes with windows purchased from big-box stores.

Golden and unincorporated Jefferson County properties face wind load requirements stricter than the Denver metro floor. Casement windows with multi-point locking systems that engage the sash at three or more perimeter points distribute wind load across the full frame rather than concentrating it at a single latch. We pull Jefferson County permits routinely and know which products pass inspection on the first visit.
