What Is an Awning Window?

An awning window is a single-sash unit hinged continuously along the top rail of the frame. A crank operator at the sash base drives an extension arm that pushes the bottom of the sash outward and holds it at the desired opening angle. When open, the sash tilts away from the wall at the bottom, creating the awning geometry that gives the style its name.

Full-Width Top Hinge Rail

Three or more hinge points run across the entire top sash rail rather than down one vertical side. This distributed hinge arrangement carries the sash load evenly across the top frame member and is what allows the bottom of the sash to swing outward without twisting or racking. Bottom-Opening Swing

When the crank is turned, the bottom of the sash pushes outward and downward from the wall. Base-Mounted Crank Operator
